Simple motion, unfolding from various angles and vantage points in harmonic space.
On one level this piece is simply a meditation on simple harmonic motion: I-V-I, a kind of musical readymade. Yet another level, I wanted to capture the inherent perceptual complexity of a simple musical gesture by slowing it down, refracting it, and observing it from different angles and vantage points.
In my music I am often interested in exploring how things that are so familiar to us as listeners always have a kind of “back door” that leads us to a place that makes us ask “what do I actually hear?” I try to sustain a state, a form, or maybe even a kind of object, that one can experience from various angles through listening.
